The information provided in the Control Your Drinking Online Program is based on several randomised control trials conducted in Australia . These trials offered treatment via mail (i.e. correspondence) to people who wished to learn to cut down their drinking. We now know from these studies that:
(a) many people can cut down their drinking on their own,
(b) more women prefer to participate in such trials,
(c) participants prefer the anonymity offered by treatment by mail, and
(d) the gains made by participating in such trials are well maintained for a long time.
However, the Australian Centre for Addiction Research make no claims that the Control Your Drinking Online Program will be helpful for every individual.

This program may not be suitable for you, if you:
(a) consider yourself an alcoholic, or
(b) have been advised by a health professional not to drink any alcohol, or
(c) are currently on medications with a clear warning not to drink, or
(d) have experienced significant alcohol-related problems as a result of your drinking, or
(e) have family and friends who have suggested that it is best you do not drink any alcohol, or
(f) are a female and is currently pregnant or planning pregnancy.
